  • Wanda Barzee who was convicted for her role in the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart is set to be released

Elizabeth Smart said Tuesday that the Utah parole board's decision to release one of the people who abducted her was surprising and "incomprehensible".

The surprise move announced Tuesday comes after authorities determined they had miscalculated the time 72-year-old Wanda Barzee previously served in federal custody.

However, the news release goes on: "based on further review and advice from legal counsel, the Board must count the time in federal prison as credit to the Utah sentence and therefore Ms. Barzee's sentence ends on September 19, 2018". On Sept. 11, Elizabeth issued a statement on the decision, revealing how exactly she feels about her abductor being free to walk among the public on Sept. 19 after just 15 years in prison. "I am trying to understand how and why this happened and exploring possible options".

The news release goes on to say that at the June hearing that "Ms. Barzee's attorney contended that Ms. Barzee's federal sentence should run concurrently with her state sentence and therefore the Board had miscalculated the end of Ms. Barzee's state sentence...." She began serving her federal sentence that same day.

Three months later, she pleaded guilty to state charges for the attempted kidnapping plot of Smart's cousin, Olivia Wright, in July 2002 - just a month after she and Mitchell had nabbed Smart.

On Tuesday, the parole board said she has now completed both her sentences.

She did not say how she knows Barzee has the book.

Elizabeth Smart is pictured at a November 2015 press conference drawing attention to the search for missing Utahns. "The fact that this woman will be free to potentially attempt to make contact with Elizabeth, or even worse, her children, is a truly terrifying thought, and it's creating a lot of anxiety for Elizabeth and the rest of her family", our source continues. Nine months later, a passer-by spotted her walking down the street with her two captors and notified police. She works as a victim's advocate, and speaks widely on the topic. He also forced her to watch him have sex with Barzee. They held her captive for nine months, during which Smart said she was raped repeatedly, and were arrested in 2003. At that time, the board did not credit Barzee's sentence in the Utah system with time served in the federal system. The Board counted credit for time served in jail and the state hospital pre-conviction but did not count the time she spent in federal prison as credit to her Utah sentence.
