83-Foot Wave Recorded By Satellite Monitoring Hurricane Florence

  • A mandatory evacuation is in effect in preparation of the approaching Hurricane Florence

The forecast track has the storm moving slowly along the coast throughout Friday and into Saturday.

Florence is forecast to move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and northeastern SC in the hurricane warning area Thursday night and Friday.

The area to the north of Florence's landfall along the North Carolina coast-storm surge is always worst to the "right" of a storm's center, where its rotation pushes water onshore-is less populated and developed than the New Jersey and NY shores.

Outside this zone of destructive winds, damaging winds are still likely, even some distance inland from the coast, which would lead to minor structural damage, downed trees and widespread power outages. "So the potential impact from the surge has not changed because the system is weaker", he said.

Several of the images were taken when the ISS was directly over the eye of the hurricane. Tropical-storm-force winds are between 39 and 73 miles per hour. It was moving 10 miles per hour toward the Port City, the advisory said.

But what forecasters are keeping an eye on, in particular, is the forward motion of the storm. Fox News' Griff Jenkins reported Thursday morning from Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, where a lifelong resident explained his decision not to evacuate.

Sustained winds remained at 90 miles per hour, but the storm - which was never expected to threaten the US coast - should begin to weaken over the next day and become a tropical storm on Thursday, forecasters said in an 11 a.m. advisory.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed declarations of emergency for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, freeing up federal resources for storm response. Though Ike had 110mph winds at landfall, it had grown very large over the Gulf of Mexico, and this large size allowed it to develop an enormous amount of "integrated energy" that manifested itself as a devastating storm surge.

While the storm may have slowed down slightly, it will still bring life-threatening storm surges, high winds, massive flooding and power cuts as it makes landfall on the coast of North and SC.

"You put your life at risk by staying", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday. The National Hurricane Center says it's now expected to hit Wilmington and then veer west, taking it south of Charlotte.

"Just because the wind speeds came down, the intensity of this storm came down to a Category 2, please do not let your guard down", said FEMA Administrator Brock Long.

Google is Shutting Down Inbox
The company claimed that it had no plans to change its email client and saw it as a place to continue testing innovative features. This update brought more of Inbox's features to Gmail, adding to those that had already made their way across.

Penn said the primary focus at the start will be on critical "life and death" infrastructure along the coastline, including 911 service, hospitals, police and fire departments and water treatment facilities. "We're about to be in the thick of it".

Hurricane Florence has weakened slightly to a Category 2 storm, but don't be fooled, it's still incredibly unsafe. Further inland, rain totals could reach 30 centimeters in the Carolinas, and up to 24 centimeters in the rest of the Carolinas and in southwestern Virginia. "A lot of rain", said Maj. And this, he said, is like nothing Toronto has ever seen.

Torrential rains brought about significant flooding in some areas, with the rains expected to continue over Oahu through Thursday. As Carolina officials are warning residents: leave, now, or else you're on your own.

Florence should continue losing strength as it menders along the coast, weakening further as the storm travels across inland SC on Saturday, the weather service said.

The storm fell to a Category 2 Wednesday night, but faced with new forecasts that showed a more southerly threat, Georgia's governor joined his counterparts in Virginia and North and SC in declaring a state of emergency, and some residents who had thought they were safely out of range boarded up their homes.

Hurricane Florence is seen from the International Space Station as it churns in the Atlantic Ocean towards the east coast of the United States, September 10, 2018.

McMaster told residents in some counties that emergency responders will be pulled from areas expected to be hit hard.

"This is a life-threatening situation".

Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch areas, also beginning later this morning local time.

Storm surge is deadly.

Numerous communities throughout the region have issued either mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders.
