  • Osaka tames Keys to set up US Open final with childhood idol Serena

After Serena lost the first set to the 20th seed, chair umpire Carlos Ramos gave Serena the first code violation in the form of a warning early in the second set for getting instructions from her coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

During a media conference, Williams said the umpire "alleged that I was cheating, and I wasn't cheating", referring to her coach Mouratoglou's gestures towards her during the match.

But Osaka broke back in the next game and the American smashed her racket in frustration, earning a second code violation and a one-point deduction from Ramos. Ramos then issued Williams a full game penalty after she called him a "thief", saying the comment amounted to verbal abuse.

"Because I'm a woman, you're going to take this away from me?" she said to officials. As she sat in her chair during the changeover, Williams demanded an apology from Ramos for accusing of her cheating. "I've seen other men call other umpires several things and I'm here fighting for women's rights and women's equality". This is not fair.

"There's a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things", Williams said, "and because they are men, that doesn't happen". "More voices are needed to do the same". Honestly, there's a lot I can learn from her from this match. I can promise you, that's not coaching, racquet abuse no doubt, but the verbal abuse???

"Congratulations Naomi", said Williams, who later said Osaka played an "amazing" match. She unwrapped a new racket and then took the court to argue again some more about coaching.

Serena Williams' hopes of winning a 24th grand slam title were dashed after extraordinary scenes at the US Open. "[Osaka's coach] was coaching every point too".

Osaka, also in tears, said: "I know everyone was cheering for her and I'm sorry it had to end like this".

Barack Obama Rebukes Donald Trump Publicly For First Time
Obama urged Democrats to vote in November's elections to restore "honesty and decency and lawfulness" to government. He also nodded to modern progressive policies by saying that "we need more women in charge" in America.

Yes, I was coaching just like everybody else.

Williams hasn't won the U.S. Open since 2014 and hasn't won anywhere since the 2017 Australian Open, when while pregnant she became the oldest Grand Slam female champion at 35.

And for him to take a game?

But I was, like 100 percent of the coaches on 100 percent of the matches. "I'd rather lose. I'm just letting you know!"

Before Saturday's match, Serena played Magda Linette and also beat Carina Witthoft from Germany, before eventually playing against her sister, Venus, in the third round. "Maybe in a few days I'll realize what I've done", said Osaka, adding that the noise was so great in Arthur Ashe Stadium and her focus so single-minded that she wasn't fully aware of the escalating controversy.

Williams declined to answer question about her outbursts and asked the crowd stop booing to celebrate Osaka's win. Osaka is trying to win Japan's first Grand Slam singles title.

Saturday's defeat comes at the heels of Williams' remarkable return to the game after the c-section birth of her daughter, Alexis. And they're going to be allowed to do that because of today.
