Naomi Osaka victory over Serena Williams overshadowed by sexism, racism

  • Serena Williams’ history of petulance makes a mockery of her status as a role model

I don't even call for on-court coaching [which is allowed on certain occasions in WTA events]. I think he would have (said that to a male player), I think it's a bond that they have and they way they communicate, and maybe not understanding they can have that same conversation with the women'.

When a second code violation for racquet abuse was handed out to her - along with a point penalty - Serena was left shattered and angered.

In turn, Ramos gave Williams a one-game penalty for verbal abuse which knocked her down 5-3.

That ended with Serena being docked a game, and it wasn't long before Osaka had wrapped up the title.

Williams claims that didn't know her coach was giving her instructions during the US Open Final, adding that she did not see it and that she had "never cheated in her life". She was graceful during an awkward trophy ceremony for her opponent, Naomi Osaka, but later said she would not have received the penalty if she was a woman and claimed she was fighting for women's equality.

Elsewhere among this elite club of players, Angelique Kerber moved up one spot to WTA World No.3, while Caroline Garcia jumped two positions to move directly behind the German, as Romania's Simona Halep and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki retain the top positions.

Williams continued to argue that it was not fair that she be accused of cheating and mentioned that tennis officials had done that before as she held back tears.

Perhaps the most important job of all for an umpire is to respect the ephemeral nature of the competitors and the contest.

"You will never, ever be on another court of mine". Williams then called Ramos a thief. After the match, Williams refused to shake hands with Ramos and suggested he needed to apologize again.

"I feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions, and that want to express themselves, and they want to be a strong woman, and they're going to be allowed to do that because of today. Thank you", tweeted the 20-year-old Osaka, who is projected to rise to seventh in the world rankings on Monday.

Could Serena have handled things better?

"Yesterday's match showcased one of tennis' new stars as well as one of the greatest players of the game", Simons concluded. Unfortunately for those who will come up against her, you bet.
