Woods played his first nine holes in 29 strokes, hit 16 greens in regulation and shot 8-under-par 62 at Aronimink Golf Club in the first round of the BMW Championship.

American Schauffele hit 17 greens in regulation and used a hot putter for a six-under-par 64 on the Aronimink course west of Philadelphia.

Woods will hold a share of the first-round lead for the first time since the 2013 WGC-Cadillac Championship, a tournament he went on to win.

Woods also had a disappointing second day and slipped five shots off the lead to tied 12th after a level-par 70.

The Greystones man birdied three of his last four holes but finished two shots outside the cut line on one-over par.

Rose, who won at Aronomink in 2010, showed his liking for the storied venue once more with a marvellous 63 to be just two behind Schauffele.

"It's not like I've had a bad year", he said after a round that included a 40-foot birdie at the 11th hole.
