BERNIE'S BILLIONS: Sanders Unveils Anti-Amazon 'STOP BEZOS ACT'

  • Bernie Sanders had words for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Monday

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced the "Stop BEZOS Act" on Wednesday, which would require large, profitable companies like Amazon to pay the government a 100% tax on any federal aid their employees receive, including Medicaid, food stamps, and public housing. Anecdotes shared by current and former Amazon employees corroborate these findings.

During a press conference announcing the bill, Sanders noted that many large corporations-not just Amazon-employ workers who rely on federal assistance to make ends meet, including Walmart and McDonald's.

Amazon quickly hit back against the attacks, refuting Sanders' claims about public assistance and encouraging its fulfillment center employees to tweet positive things (in exchange for gift cards) about their experiences working at the company. Earlier this year, Amazon said in a government filing that its median salary is $28,446 - a figure, Amazon said, that include the compensation for part-time employees.

(U.S. Edition) Facebook chief operation officer Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, as tech companies are in Washington to discuss the possible impacts of foreign influence on their platforms. Rep. Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, introduced a House version of the same bill named the Corporate Responsibility and Taxpayer Protection Act.

Off-duty Texas police officer shoots man after mistaking apartment as her own
Two women who live on the second floor near where the shooting happened said they heard a lot of noise late Thursday (local time). The unnamed Dallas officer entered the apartment after her shift on Thursday night and confronted the victim, a 26-year-old male.

Amazon, which has more than 575,000 workers, is the country's second-largest private employer, behind Walmart. Called the Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies Act, or Stop BEZOS Act, the tax would apply only to companies with 500 or more employees. He also mentioned that Amazon is doing "phenomenally well" and Bezos could send a "profound message" by paying all of its employees a living wage. Lynch didn't answer whether those temporary workers would qualify for the same benefits, but said temporary employees only account for a small percentage of the Amazon workforce on average.

Business Insider contacted Amazon for comment on the bill.

The proposal by the socialist who came within an ace of being the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee would tax employers one dollar for every dollar that their employees take in food stamp, health-care and other welfare benefits.

Employees also receive a "block of unpaid time off to account for running late and they can use that time like a checking account, deducting when necessary for time out of work", Lynch writes. "As I am sure you know, with my very strong support, the state legislature voted to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour".
