US service member killed in apparent insider attack in Afghanistan today

The last time a U.S. soldier was killed in an insider attack was on July 7 in the country's south.

It comes less than two months after one U.S. serviceman was killed and two others wounded in a separate insider attack in southern Afghanistan. Neither service member was identified.

A US service member has been killed and another wounded in an attack in eastern Afghanistan, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission says.

President Ashraf Ghani met with US General Austin Scott Miller just hours after he took command of US Forces-Afghanistan and of Operation Resolute Support on Sunday at a ceremony in Kabul, Ghani's office said in a statement.

He added, 'Our duty now is to honor him, care for his family and continue our mission'.

He took over the role from Army Gen. John Nicholson.

Some 15,000 American troops remain in Afghanistan, down from a high over 100,000 during the Obama administration.

Nangarhar has been among the relatively calm provinces since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001 but the anti-government armed militants have been attempting to expand their foothold in this province during the recent years.
