A very strong typhoon is forecast to make landfall in the Shikoku region or the Kinki region including the Kii Peninsula on Tuesday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Monday, warning of violent winds, high waves and heavy rains.

Typhoon Jebi, the 21st storm of the season, is packing winds of up to 252 kph (156 mph) and had a barometric pressure of 935 hectopascals as of 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Meteorological Agency.

The path of the typhoon appeared to cover the western Chugoku region, where record rainfall in July unleashed flooding and landslides, killing around 220 people in Japan's worst weather-related disaster in decades.

Categorized as "very strong" by the agency based on the strength of its top winds, Jebi would be the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan since 1993 if it maintains its force, an agency official said at an emergency press conference.

"Rainstorms will likely intensify suddenly as the typhoon is approaching while picking up speed", the official said, warning people to prepare for evacuations and not go outside unless absolutely necessary.

It is expected to hit Honshu on Tuesday, the agency said.

At least 600 flights in western and central Japan are expected to be cancelled.

All Nippon Airways Co. and Japan Airlines Co. have canceled 289 and 180 flights, respectively.

Primary and middle schools in affected areas are closed for safety reasons, while regional businesses also reacted quickly, with a major railway firm and Universal Studios Japan in Osaka shutting down for Tuesday. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cancelled a scheduled trip to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, to oversee the government's response to the typhoon, Kyodo News service said. High waves hit breakwaters at a port of Aki.

The storm was bearing down on western Japan and set to make landfall on Shikoku, the smallest main island.

The Tokyo metropolitan area may see strong winds, although the typhoon is unlikely to pass close to the capital.

Some parts are likely to see up to 300mm of rain fall in a 24 hour period with winds gusting up to 216 kilometres per hour.
