  • The New Yorker has rescinded its invitation to former White House strategist Steve Bannon to its festival after stars like Jim Carrey Judd Apatow John Mulaney and Patton Oswalt said they were pulling out in protest

It's nearly been two decades since the first New Yorker festival that features celebrity panels offering their own, unique views on issues, but this year someone won't be appearing.

'This is PT Barnum level horse***t.

Faced with all these A-list departures, festival organizers quickly made a decision to do an about-face, announcing that Bannon would no longer be invited to speak.

Apatow, director of such hit comedies as "Trainwreck" and "Bridesmaids", declared he "will not take part in an event that normalizes hate". "I hope the @NewYorker will do the right thing and cancel the Steve Bannon event".

"I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered", Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced Mr Trump and his administration, wrote of his decision on Mr Bannon.

Analysts say it would be risky to try to regulate how search engines work to please a government or political faction. It is the second time this week that President Trump has accused Google of bias against him.

An annual festival organized by the prestigious New Yorker magazine has disinvited a headlining guest, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, after numerous panelists announced they would drop out if he remained.

After the initial invite to the controversial Bannon caused an uproar, David Remnick, the magazine's editor, told staff members on Monday that he is canceling the former Breitbart chief's appearance. "Maybe they should read their own reporting about his ideology". Other prominent people, including Chelsea Clinton, tweeted that the event would be giving Bannon another platform for his ideas.

"Bannon? And me? On the same program?" asked Carey. "Sorry, NewYorker. See if Milo Yiannopoulos is free?" a reference to the far-right writer and speaker whose memoir was dropped previous year by Simon & Schuster after numerous complaints.

The magazine's Twitter team later posted a lengthy statement from Remnick, explaining why they invited Bannon in the first place.

Author Roxane Gay pointed out that a publication with the prestige of The New Yorker seeming to welcome Bannon to the table, even for a contentious debate, only legitimizes him. By conducting an interview with one of Trumpism's leading creators and organizers, we are hardly pulling him out of obscurity.
