  • Tropical Storm Conditions and Heavy Rainfall Possible Over Portions of the Central Gulf Coast Tuesday Night and Wednesday

Lightning is likely, and waterspouts and tropical funnels could occur Tuesday and Wednesday and some could come ashore, according to the weather service.

Tropical Storm Gordon is the Atlantic basin's seventh named storm of the year, expected to approach the northern Gulf Coast Tuesday. Its forecast path takes the storm directly to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Tropical storm warnings were raised for portions of South Florida, from Golden Beach to Bonita Beach, and for the Keys from Craig Key to Ocean Reef, including Florida Bay.

The storm is located about 605 miles (970 kilometers) west-northwest of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of western Africa. "We will be watching, but I don't think it will affect us in the next week".

While the first half of the Atlantic Hurricane season (June - August) was less active than predicted, the second half of the season has already produced three tropical waves. There were no reports of any injuries or deaths or any damages to buildings, said Alberto Moscoso, a spokesman for the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Gordon was expected to strengthen over the Gulf of Mexico to almost hurricane-level winds before making landfall late on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The center of the system was 20 miles west of Key Largo and it was moving west-northwest at 17 mph. The storm system will reach reach the central Gulf Coast by late Tuesday night and move inland over the lower Mississippi Valley on Wednesday.

Wind gusts from the storm were expected to hit Florida from Monday afternoon, with Governor Rick Scott reminding people to remain vigilant.
