The fifth-named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is now brewing over the North Atlantic.

While there was not a direct hit, the storm system was close enough to generate high surf to some shores.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Lane's maximum sustained winds had increased to 70 miles per hour (110 kph) and the storm was expected to become a major hurricane by the weekend.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, Lane was packing sustained winds of 130 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Northern England, parts or Ireland and southern Scotland are all most likely to feel the brunt of the heavy storm.

Lane is expected to strengthen over the next three days as it travels west, Derek Wroe, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in Honolulu, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

'Ex-Ernesto will then merge with an Atlantic low pressure system.

BBC forecaster Simon King said: "Into the weekend, we have got this area of low pressure, a tropical storm is actually going to move its way in across the United Kingdom, particularly through Saturday night into Sunday".

Sunday night will remain sticky as Ernesto begins to depart, with the tail-end of the storm leaving humid air and wet and windy conditions across the North West.
