"A great economic reformer, as a Prime Minister he was always guided by a strong conviction that liberalisation would help us realize our economic potential and ultimately open the doors to becoming a globally competitive, strong and resilient economy", Bharti Enterprises Founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said. After his passing, Vajpayee's body was placed at his residence at Krishna Menon Marg.

"As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, it has been decided that seven days of state mourning will be observed throughout India from August 16-22, both days inclusive".

Modi's government presented Vajpayee as an icon, seeking inspiration from his political career and cashing in on his stature and popularity as a statesman acceptable across political divides.

He was ousted in 2004 elections by the Congress Party led by Sonia Gandhi, which selected Manmohan Singh as prime minister. Vajpayee was among India's most popular politicians and a founding leader of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Regional rival Pakistan followed suit with tests of its own a few months later.

His peace efforts began with a groundbreaking bus ride to Lahore, Pakistan, in February 1999, where he met with then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

A brief and contained conflict subsequently took place, in which Pakistani forces had to withdraw under military and diplomatic pressure.

He had since rarely been seen or heard in public. He suffered a stroke in 2009 and was also hospitalised that year with a serious respiratory infection.
