Fraser Anning: Australia MPs condemn 'final solution' speech

  • Nazi phrase ‘final solution’ used by Katter MP Fraser Anning in ‘racist’ speech

Senator Fraser Anning has copped a canning from Hobsons Bay political figures, after he called for a complete overhaul of the immigration system, insisting most migrants should be from a European Christian background and all Muslims should be banned.

He said: "The final solution to the immigration problem of course is a popular vote".

He also sparked widespread opposition by calling for a ban on Muslim migrants and defending the race-based White Australia immigration policy which was in place for seven decades from 1901.

"So why would anyone want to bring more of them here?"

Fraser Anning was elected to the Senate on the ticket of the far-right One Nation Party, but has since defected to the fringe the fringe Katter's Australian Party, which holds even more extreme stances.

The Queensland senator from Katter's Australian Party is unapologetic about using a phrase coined by Nazi leaders in World War II to describe their plan to murder Jewish people on an industrial scale.

But politicians across the spectrum were united in denouncing his words.

Anning, formerly of One Nation but now with the Katter's Australian Party, attracted instant backlash for using the phrase "final solution" in regards to immigration.

In his maiden speech at the Senate on Tuesday, Anning targeted global students by asking for an "end to Australian-job-stealing 457 visas" and "force worldwide students to return to their country of origin once they finish their education".

Hanson rounded on senators who listened to Anning's speech without walking out in condemnation, accusing them of being "gutless" for re-entering the Senate on Wednesday to criticise him after the public mood turned.

Over more than a decade, NYU raised $450 million of the estimated $600 million it needs to maintain the scholarship. School officials said they have been working towards making the scholarship a reality for 11 years.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the government should take some responsibility for enabling Senator Anning's racist remarks.

Senator Hanson took offence at Derryn Hinch referring to Senator Anning's words as "Pauline Hanson on steroids".

"I do not like seeing majorities pick on minorities", he said.

In his maiden speech in Parliament yesterday, Anning alleged that Muslims were responsible for acts of terror and crime and were dependant on welfare.

Senator Anning refused to apologise for his comments during an interview with Channel 9's Today Show on Wednesday morning, he also walked out of the chamber as Labor Senator Penny Wong moved a motion condemning the speech.

It pisses me off deeply that people like Anning can say whatever they want but will never have their very identity questioned.

The non-apology was followed up with an appearance on Sydney's 2GB Radio, where he told host Alan Jones that Muslim immigration needed to end because some of the immigrants could be terrorists.

"Some in the media and leftwing politicians are simply afraid of the Australian people having a say on who comes here".

Ms Aly told Parliament she was proud of the response from all sides of politics against Mr Anning's speech.

Hinch apologized Wednesday for shaking Anning's hand after the speech as part of protocol and said he had immediately gone home to scrub his digits.
