  • Afghan volunteers carry a body on a stretcher to a hospital Wednesday after a suicide attack in Kabul

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said the attackers were firing rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons but it was unclear how many gunmen were involved.

But officials have also said they are bracing for more violence with the approach of parliamentary elections in October.

A suicide bombing in Kabul on Wednesday killed dozens of teenagers studying for university entrance exams at an educational center in a Shiite neighborhood, according to wire reports.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Kabul blast but the attack bore the hallmark of ISIS, which has conducted many previous attacks on Shi'ite targets.

Dilawar Aymaq, a parliamentarian from Baghlan, said the attack targeted a military checkpoint and another manned by the so-called local police, militias recruited and paid by the Interior Ministry.

But the cost that that military confrontation exacts in civilian lives and disruption undermines the credibility of the government, undermines people's confidence in the government, and that in many ways is the goal of the attacks.

The head of the United Nations children's agency denounced the attack, saying it's "deplorable" that children continue to be hardest hit in the growing violence across Afghanistan. UNICEF continues to call on all parties to the conflict to adhere to and respect humanitarian principles, and ensure the safety and protection of all children. Members "underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice", the statement said.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the government should take some responsibility for enabling Senator Anning's racist remarks. It pisses me off deeply that people like Anning can say whatever they want but will never have their very identity questioned.

Moreover, The New York Times had reported that Afghan officials had claimed the Taliban were aided by foreign fighters, including Pakistanis and Chechens, and even some Al Qaeda affiliates.

"My house was just near the front line, the Taliban would force people to bring them food and tea", Hassan Safari, one of hundreds of residents who were forced to hide in their basements, told the AFP.

After five days of fighting, Afghan security forces have now regained control of the city, with Taliban fighters pulling out.

Life was gradually returning to normal Wednesday in parts of the eastern city of Ghazni after a massive, days-long Taliban attack, though sporadic gunbattles was still underway in some neighborhoods.

The UN has warned that as many as 150 civilians may have also been killed.

This comes as the anti-government armed militants have been attempting to expand their attacks in the key provinces and cities of the country during the recent months.

"It's the fighting season and the Taliban will want to rack up victories before winter".
