  • White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reads a statement from President Donald Trump announcing that he will remove the security clearance from former CIA Director John Brennan during the daily press briefing at the White House Wednesday Aug

"I call it the rigged witch hunt, [it] is a sham", Mr. Trump said in a Wednesday interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Among other things, Trump pointed to Brennan's statement to Congress in 2014 denying that Central Intelligence Agency officials had improperly accessed the computer files of congressional staffers.

Trump's statement said the Brennan issue raises larger questions about the practice of allowing former officials to maintain their security clearances, and said that others officials' were under review.

Some suggested Trump might have grander, and more nefarious ambitions: he could be testing the waters on stripping Mueller of his security clearance. "Won't have any effect on what I say or write".

Clapper, reacting on CNN, called Trump's actions "unprecedented", but said he didn't plan to stop speaking out. "I think that they're very duplicitous". Given Trump's fondness for NDAs, I wonder if the next step will be to add nondisparagement clauses to all executive-branch security clearance applications. "And the campaign's former deputy chairman, Rick Gates, has pleaded guilty to financial fraud and lying to investigators", he added.

"We have never had a former Communist who we now know spread Russian lies to disinform and propagandize the American people [and affect] a presidential election", Sean Hannity said.

"No. If there were others that weren't, that we deemed necessary, we would certainly take a look and review those as well", Ms. Sanders said when asked if Mr. Trump is going after his political opponents.

He said in a statement: "Once again this president is sending a message that he will punish people who disagree with him and reward those who praise him".

Former top national security officials have historically maintained their security clearances so they can consult with their successors. He's also been critical of the president.

Trump said Brennan's clearance was revoked due to a pattern of "erratic behavior" and dishonesty.

What needs to be borne in mind in all this is, as former FBI Director James Comey himself has admitted: "I was making decisions in an environment where Hillary Clinton was sure to be the next president". Yates served in the Obama administration and had agreed to stay in the job under Trump.

Admiral Michael Rogers, Director of the National Security Agency and commander of U.S. Cyber Command, testifies during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on May 23, 2017.

One theory popular among Democrats this afternoon for why Brennan's clearance was revoked today is that Trump is trying to "distract" from the Omarosa trainwreck. "Not only were Trump's comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin". "There has been a clear dividing of the political and national security realms within our country".
