  • Heavy monsoon rains kill 44 people in southern India, close airport

The suspension of operations at Cochin International Airport will continue till 2pm on Saturday (August 18), the airport's managing director said. "Many districts in the state are facing floods", tweeted Kerala's chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who said the state was experiencing "unprecedented flood havoc".

All rivers from northern district of Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram in the south are in spate.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held an emergency meeting today.

More and more people poured into relief camps, including those who had earlier returned to their homes in Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Wayanad districts.

Flights in and out of the Indian tourist hotspot of Kerala were cancelled for three days Wednesday as severe monsoon flooding ravaged the region. The water level in Mullaperiyar Dam now stands at 142 ft.

A number of scheduled departures from Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport have been cancelled after it was announced Cochin International Airport will be closed from Wednesday until Saturday.

PM Modi has not only asked the Ministry of Defence to step up Kerala relief and rescue operations but also spoken to the CM again assuring all help possible from the Centre. Telecommunication companies have also been told to maintain services despite the challenges. Landslides have caused heavy damage and deaths in northern districts.

The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), which made a decision to suspend the arrival operations at 4 am to 7 am today as a precautionary measure, had earlier said the airport would be shut till 2 pm.

At a press conference, Vijayan described what he called an unprecented situation: A total of 80 dams operated by the Kerala's electricity board and water authorities have reached maximum capacity. The same is due to heavy inflow of water consequent to opening of dams. We are working hard to drain out the storm water.
