German chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian president Vladimir Putin are set to meet each other in Berlin this Saturday for talks about the controversial Baltic Sea Gas Pipeline, Nord Stream 2, which has been the target of raging criticism by U.S. president Donald Trump and his administration.

According to Seibert, the sides will discuss the relevant issues of foreign policy, including the resolution of Syrian problems, the situation in the east of Ukraine and issues in the energy realm. Relations have been tense between Russia and Western powers, including Germany, over a range of issues, from the Ukraine and Syria conflicts to charges of Russian cyber-attacks and election meddling in several North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member countries.

The two leaders, who last met in May, will each make statements at 1600 GMT before the start of the talks at the Meseberg palace outside the German capital, said Steffen Seibert, adding that Merkel and Putin would take no questions.

Ex-Trump aide Manafort's defense rests, case headed to jury
Late Monday, Manafort's team also made a motion to dismiss all the charges, saying the government hadn't met its burden of proof. Defence attorneys have so far blamed any wrongdoing on Rick Gates , Manafort's former protege, who testified August 6.

The Russian foreign Ministry said that the discussions addressed the issue of "creating conditions for the return of refugees" in Syria.

Moving ahead with the natural gas project Nord Stream 2 will be one of the main topics, despite opposition to the plan from the USA and several eastern European countries.

Merkel told Putin in May the pipeline should go ahead, but that Moscow has to commit to maintaining some gas transit via Ukraine. It will carry some 55 billion cubic meters per year (Bcm/y) of gas to European customers, bypassing the traditional Russia-to-Europe route via Ukraine.
