  • Maryland Terrapins accept responsibility for mistakes made in death of Jordan McNair

University President Wallace Loh said the visit to the McNair home was to apologize personally for the loss.

"I have looked into the eyes of a grieving mother and father, and there is simply nothing good enough", Loh added. McNair was said to have had a temperature of 106 at the hospital. I said to them, and I said I would mention it publicly this afternoon - but I wanted them to hear it directly from me this morning - the university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes that our training staff made on that fateful workout day of May the 29th, which of course led subsequently to his death on June 13th. "Other safeguarding actions were not taken". Evans added that a decision on the status of head coach DJ Durkin, who is on administrative leave, will come "as additional information comes forward".

Court, who posted his resignation letter on Twitter, "contributed to an environment based on fear and intimidation, including throwing objects and small weights in the direction of players", sources told ESPN. A final report is expected by mid-September.

DJ Durkin, the head football coach, was placed on administrative leave August 11, after ESPN reported "allegations of abuse and disparagement in the program" that included "belittling, humiliation and embarrassment of players" and "extreme verbal abuse" and a player who said "he was forced to overeat or eat to the point of vomiting".

Athletic director Damon Evans said on Tuesday that Rick Court is no longer associated with the program.

The university said it is conducting an independent review.

The minister said those calling for independent investigations should instead urge the coalition "to tighten the rules of engagement".

McNair's heat illness was not promptly identified, and athletic training staff did not take his temperature and apply a cold-water immersion treatment, Evans said.

"We have learned that Jordan did not receive appropriate medical care, and mistakes were made by some of our athletic training personnel", Evans said.

Loh is adamant in his belief that the school will take steps to make sure this never happens again.

After the allegations on Friday, Maryland put Durkin on leave due to "allegations of inappropriate behavior" along with other staffers that included Court.

Durkin was present at the May 29 workout, though the drills were run by Court and his staff. Hospital medical records suggest that McNair still had a body temperature measuring 106 degrees almost 40 minutes after a 911 call was placed to report his condition. His death was caused by heatstroke, according to the Jordan McNair Foundation.

"At no point before or during the external review has a student-athlete, athletic trainer or coach reported a seizure occurring at 5 p.m.", the school previously said in a statement.
