At the same time, Calk, who has not been charged with a crime but has been characterized by prosecutors as an unindicted co-conspirator, approved loans for Manafort to the tune of $9.5 million in November 2016 and $6.5 million in January 2017, coinciding with Trump's election and inauguration, according to CNN.

The defense called no witnesses, choosing to rely instead on the team's cross-examination of government witnesses including Rick Gates, Manafort's longtime deputy, and several accountants, bookkeepers and bankers who had financial dealings with Manafort.

After hearing some 20 witnesses for prosecutors describe how Manafort allegedly evaded taxes on millions of dollars and repeatedly lied to banks as he borrowed millions more, a jury of 12 could begin deliberating on the case as early as late Wednesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, the jurors were recalled to hear of the defense team's decision, and then dismissed for the day.

Key case: Paul Manafort, a one-time Trump campaign chairman, is the first person to go to trial on charges brought by the Robert Mueller special counsel probe. He's also accused of fraudulently obtaining millions in bank loans.

Closing arguments are expected to take place Wednesday.

Television cameras are positioned outside the U.S. District Courthouse where former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort is being tried on charges stemming from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, in Alexandria, Virginia, U.S., August 7, 2018. When it resumed, he asked whether they had a defense to present.

Neither the White House , Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor Apple immediately responded to a request for comment. What a boycott on iPhones (and potentially other Apple products) would mean for these locations isn't clear.

The prosecution rested its case yesterday following two weeks of evidence detailing years of Manafort's financial life, including alleged efforts to avoid paying US income taxes on the money he earned overseas and efforts, after his income flow dried up, to fraudulently apply for loans in the United States.

Manafort looked at the jury as his lead attorney, Kevin Downing, said they wouldn't present any evidence.

On Monday, James Brennan, the vice president of The Federal Savings Bank, testified under immunity about a loan the bank gave Manafort.

"They are all jury issues", Ellis said, explaining that he believed it should be up to the jury to decide.

Still, the proceedings have drawn President Donald Trump's attention - and tweets - as he works to undermine the standing of the Mueller investigation in the public square.

During testimony, Gates was forced to admit to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort and conducting an extramarital affair.
