The residential building was thought to be storing weapons and ammunition, a war monitor said.

The group, which has a network of sources throughout Syria, said an arms depot in the basement of the building detonated, causing the entire multi-story structure to collapse.

He said some 45 civilians have also been injured in the explosion, which destroyed two 6-storey buildings inhabited by displaced civilians.

Rescuers used bulldozers to remove the debris and pull out trapped people.

The explosion took place in the village of Sarmada, along the border with Turkey.

The Britain-based Observatory said regime reinforcements, including troops and equipment, had been amassing around the southwestern part of Idlib for several days.

Around 60% of Idlib is held by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is led by Al-Qaeda's former Syria affiliate.

Daesh also has sleeper cells in the area.

In recent months, a series of explosions and assassinations - mainly targeting opposition officials and fighters - have rocked the province.

On Friday, 12 civilians, three of them children, were killed in regime bombardment of the towns of Khan Sheikhun and Al-Tah.

President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad has indicated that government forces intend to retake Idlib after his Russia-backed regime gained control of areas of terrorist-held territory in other areas. Gen. Alexei Tsygankov, the head of the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation, said that the militants operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone continued shelling settlements in Syria "over the past 24 hours".

Government helicopters on Thursday dropped leaflets over towns in Idlib's eastern countryside urging people to surrender.

The war in Syria has killed more than 500,000 people since it began in 2011 with a brutal regime crackdown on protesters.
