Tiger Woods hangs in there at the turn in the PGA Championship

In the search for two shots that could've made the difference, one could point to the bad drive on 17, the agonizing miss on 11 or a 12-foot putt to save par that went halfway in but rimmed out on No. 14 and briefly halted his momentum.

Still, it is the first time since the 2005 Masters that Woods has shot consecutive rounds of 66 or better in a major championship.

Woods (-8) enters the final day four strokes back of leader Brooks Koepka (-12), so he'll need another big round if he's going to make a run at the final major of the season.

He did raise the roof one more time when he drained a 20-foot putt for a closing birdie on 18 to card a 64 and finish on 14 under, but Woods' lowest final round of his major career was not enough to deny the nerveless Koepka.

Shane Lowry got to ten under par early on the back nine, but again was just too far back from Koepka who kept his aggressive style throughout.

Six birdies in his first 13 holes offset a solitary bogey and lifted Woods, who started the day 10th, to within a shot of the lead amid increasing excitement.

For the second major in a row the reports of the Woods resurrection proved to be somewhat exaggerated.

Horizon Air is part of Alaska Air Group and operates shorter routes throughout the US West. The two F-15C aircraft scrambled from Portland didn't fire at the plane, authorities said.

That Woods was still in contention after his first nine holes Sunday was a testament to the sort of resilience he can show, not only over the long haul, but over the ups-and-downs of a pressure-packed round.

It wasn't meant to be for Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship where he finished tied for second. Woods was finally here and it is fair to suggest that, outside of the Ryder Cup, the Sunday roars have never been more vocally expressed.

The five-time major victor has also been on every U.S. Presidents Cup team dating to 1994. "The golf course is playing soft, it's gettable, you have to make birdies". He did well to advance it, but had to save par from a bunker.

"What he did at Shinnecock, just bombing it, and then he's doing the same thing here". He's won the PGA four times, the last in 2007. And with the FedEx Cup Playoffs approaching, Tiger has the golf world on notice. 2 and 3 and after sending his drive at the ninth hole left into the Midwest multitude, a common theme on his opening loop, he played his second from the mud and mayhem to 10 feet and calmly rolled in the birdie putt.

After another errant drive on the 14th, the four-time PGA Championship victor suffered a costly bogey. "So I had to kind of figure this out on my own and it's been really hard, it's a lot harder than people think".

Woods said he had trouble judging the speed of the greens, especially on the back nine, and his three-putt on 17 was the result of an over-correction.
