Woakes and Bairstow grind India into the Lord's dirt as England dominate

Root was clearly hoping that the lingering damp and overcast conditions would benefit Anderson and the 36-year-old took full advantage with some outstanding swing bowling.

Earlier, England skipper Joe Root won the toss and opted to field in the morning, after the opening day's play on Thursday was completely washed out due to incessant rain.

Anderson, who has 544 Test wickets, will have his eyes on equaling Ian Botham's record of 27 five-wicket hauls in the longest format.

It was the first time a whole day's Test play in England had been lost to bad weather since August 24, 2013 when the fourth day of the fifth Ashes clash at The Oval was abandoned without a ball bowled.

After a rain delay, things got really ugly for the visitors.

Kohli, who was looking all at sea against Woakes, finally fell to the right-armer in his third over, with Jos Buttler making no mistake this time at second slip.

Kohli and Pujara were friends before the mix-up.

Hollywood Walk of Fame covered in Trump stars after vandalism
Numerous stars, though, were peeled off during the day, with some saying that they feared vandalism if the fake stars stayed. President Donald Trump's often-vandalized Hollywood Walk of Fame star sprouted 50 some-odd duplicates this week.

After a light shot to point from Pujara, Kohli began running to the risky striker's end, but soon changed his mind as he realised the risk of the situation.

By contrast, England's innings commenced under sunny blue skies that promised to make life easier for the batsmen.

In the ninth over of the Indian innings, James Anderson bowled a back of a length delivery to Pujara who tapped and took off for a run.

Pujara and Kohli were involved in a run out which led to Pujara's wicket and turned the match in England's favour.

While left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin may play a key role to trap Englishmen.

Warwickshire favourite Woakes, recalled after England omitted Ben Stokes because of a clash with his fellow pace-bowling all-rounder's trial for affray, had missed the hosts' 31-run win in the first Test at his Edgbaston home ground last week because of fitness concerns following knee and calf injuries.

As expected England gave a test debut to 20-year-old Surrey batsman Pope, who has only 15 first-class matches under his belt but takes the place of the dropped Dawid Malan.
