President Trump Issues Statement Ahead of Deadly Charlottesville Anniversary

  • Guns banned from `Unite the Right' rally in D.C. amid fears of violent clashes

President Donald Trump condemned racism and racial violence in a tweet Saturday ahead of the anniversary of a deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The president's tweet comes ahead of planned events to mark the one-year anniversary August 12 of the deadly "Unite the Right" rally, an event where protesters gathered, some in opposition to the removal of Confederate statues, others in support of white supremacy. But some critics jumped on the president's wording of "all types of racism", saying this was just another version of Trump's claim a year ago that "both sides" were responsible for the violence.

In a tweet Saturday, the president recalled the riot's in the Virginia town resulted in senseless death and division.

"We must come together as a nation", Trump wrote on Twitter from his golf club in New Jersey.

Schoep also addressed the Charlottesville, Virginia incident and said his group, "acted in self defense ... we are not the ones creating the violence".

Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, and city and state officials are taking steps to make sure there is not another violent outbreak.

Estimates vary on how many white nationalist protesters will show up.

They will likely be dwarfed by the number of counter-protestors, who plan to march to the Martin Luther King Jr.

Mourinho: Wait to see if Man Utd can contend
Midfielder Fred arrived for big money but he was the only major new signing as Mourinho's appeals for fresh defensive blood went unheeded.

Washington police chief Peter Newsham said firearms will be prohibited at the rallies, even for gun owners with legal licenses. Miska is known for trying past year to remove the shroud covering the Robert E. Lee statue at the epicenter of the original rally.

"We the people of Washington, D.C. say unequivocally that we denounce hate, we announce that we denounce anti-Semitism, and we denounce the rhetoric that we expect to hear this Sunday", said Mayor Muriel Bowser. Soon after though, he said that while there were bad people in the white supremacist group, "you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides". The following day, a much larger gathering of white nationalists near a downtown park erupted into violence.

On Aug. 12, 2017, Heather Heyer was killed when a vehicle plowed into a crowd at the rally, organized by Right-wing blogger Jason Kessler. "Hateful ideologies will not have the last word and their adherents will not get away with violent crimes against those they target", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in respect to Fields' indictment.

Activists in Charlottesville plan a rally against hate on Saturday, and numerous same alt-right groups that appeared in last year's "Unite the Right" rally are planning a sequel in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

The day's death toll rose to three when a state police helicopter that had been monitoring the event and assisting with the governor's motorcade crashed, killing two troopers.

A group of anti-fascist protesters, sometimes known as "Antifa", marched in the afternoon, carrying signs with messages like "Good Night White Pride". Gov. Northam declared a state of emergency in advance, allowing Charlottesville to have a heavy police presence. She later said the comments "had nothing to do with race or ethnicity".

But others said Saturday they were comforted by the security measures.

Black Lives Matter also have a permit for counter-protests.
