Dutch Ryanair pilots plan Friday strike as carrier takes union to court

  • У Європі розпочався наймасштабніший страйк пілотів Ryanair скасовано понад 400 рейсів

A walkout called by German union Cockpit accounted for many of Friday's cancellations.

The unions have also accused Ryanair of breaching labour laws and union sources allege that Ryanair had threatened to strip crew of productivity bonuses and warned that their promotion chances would be affected.

Ingolf Schumacher, pay negotiator at Germany's Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, said pilots had to be prepared for "a very long battle" and that it could take months to push through change at Europe's largest low-priced carrier.

Ryanair has been forced to cancel around 400 flights today as pilots go on strike across Europe.

Cockpit president Martin Locher explained earlier that the strike decision was a response to the unwillingness of Ryanair to engage in constructive discussions with pilots.

Ryanair only recognised trade unions for the first time in December 2017 and has been beset by industrial action.

Pilots in Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands also joined the 24-hour strike over demands for a collective labour agreement and better working conditions and representation.

The airline says 85 per cent of its Friday flights would operate and that affected customers would get email or text messages later on Wednesday.

It is understood that 10 flights due to arrive at Stansted Airport from Germany tomorrow have been cancelled, along with the subsequent return flights.

Ryanair built its low-priced business model without unions but said a year ago it would recognize them.

Passengers stuck overnight are "entitled to meals and accommodation until Ryanair can get them to their chosen destination", the newspaper says. In turn, the management of Ryanair asked them to reschedule the flight or return the money for the ticket, payment of other compensation is rejected.

"Improvements are inconceivable without an increase in personnel cockpit costs", he said.

"At the same time, Ryanair has at no stage signalled where there might be leeway to find solutions".

Ryanair has repeatedly said it remains open to further talks with pilot representatives. Refunds or rerouted journeys have been offered to the people concerned.

But Ryanair pilots have long claimed that they earn less than their counterparts at budget airlines like EasyJet.

Staff claim this creates huge insecurity for them, blocking their access to state benefits in their country.

Other concerns are the status of contractors whose working conditions are not as good as those enjoyed by permanently employed staff and employee contracts based on Irish legislation.
