  • Drought pushes Australian farmers to brink as they are given licence to kill kangaroos

Unable to feed their livestock, many have been forced to sell or slaughter stock, sending the cattle industry into a decline that could take years to recover.

The entire state is now in drought, according to the latest seasonal update, Department of Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair confirmed in a news release Wednesday that Sydney radio station 873AM posted to Twitter.

Australia has long dealt with harsh, dry conditions, especially inland, away from coastal areas popular with tourists.

Australia's most populous state is now "100 percent" in drought following the most intense dry spell in more than 50 years.

Less than 10 millimetres was recorded in the western, northwest and central areas of NSW over the past month and drier-than-normal conditions are forecast for the next three months across the majority of the state.

Turnbull addressed those concerns on Monday, announcing relief measures for farmers including extra money for mental health support services.

The Sunday Telegraph this week reported the federal government will give hardest-hit farmers $12,000 in two lum-sum payments from September in addition to a modest welfare payment of $295 welfare payment.

Droughts can last for a few month or even years.

"We are the land of droughts and flooding rains".

Federated Farmers is exploring ways the advocacy group can support Australian farmers impacted by the horrific drought conditions they face.

The federal and NSW state governments are providing more than A$1.5 billion (S$1.52 billion) in drought relief packages, created to offset the cost of feed and freight, and increase access to mental health services for farmers feeling the strain. "They didn't act fast enough", Col Barton, whose family has been on their farm east of Gunnedah since 1938, told AFP. We've got no idea so we run blind.

Australia's weather bureau has warned there is no end in sight and the Red Cross has set up a relief appeal, while the Salvation Army is distributing food hampers. "And the people in the city don't realise, or they are starting to realise now, everything does come off the land - the bread, the cereal, the milk".
