Nunes Explains Why Rosenstein Has Not Been Impeached In Leaked Audio

  • Rep. Devin Nunes R-Calif. on Capitol Hill

Devin Nunes was secretly recorded telling supporters that the Republicans have to keep control of the House to protect President Trump in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, according to a report.

The fundraiser, which featured Nunes as the headliner, was closed to the press.

"Sessions won't unrecuse and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones", Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said at a private fund-raiser on July 30, NBC News reported on Wednesday.

He is asked by an audience member about the effort to impeach Rosenstein, which was only publicly supported by a small group of Republicans. "That's why I keep - and thank you for saying it, by the way - I mean, we have to keep all these seats".

The California 22nd Congressional District congressman was apparently pitching himself and the Republican Party at large as a buffer for Trump, who, among several members of his election campaign, is a subject in the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. "We do not keep the majority, all of this goes away".

Nunes concludes by saying Republicans need to keep their majority in Congress to protect the president.

"The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is supposed to be an impartial investigator who follows the facts wherever they may lead", said cybersecurity reporter Eric Geller on Twitter in response to the recording.

Nunes also told the guests that Republicans are the safeguard against Trump being impeached.

Nunes also said that an effort by some hard-line House Republicans to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is on hold because of the election and because an impeachment debate would tie up the Senate and prevent it from quickly confirming Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

"So if we actually vote to impeach, OK, what that does is that triggers the Senate then has to take it up", Nunes explained to a questioner on the recording. "But ultimately let's say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails, and she chose to release those. It's a matter of, it's a matter of timing", he added. Okay, now we have a problem, right?

"If Sessions won't un-recuse and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones, which is really the danger", he says on the recording.

The series of recordings made public by Maddow do not include every question to which Nunes was responding. "Well, if that's the case, then that's criminal".

"If there ever was a better reason to get rid of Paul Ryan's party, it's this", Rubin said.

"So it's not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein".
