USA to impose new sanctions on Russian Federation for poisoning ex-spy

  • U.S. orders new sanctions against Russia over chemical attack in Britain

A Russia Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Thursday the restrictions represent a new attempt to "demonize Russia".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking to reporters on a conference call, said the United States move was "absolutely unfriendly".

The United States announced yesterday it would impose more sanctions on Russia after determining Moscow was responsible for a nerve agent attack in Britain on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33.

The Trump administration on Wednesday ordered new sanctions on Russian Federation after determining that Moscow used a nerve agent in an attack on a former Soviet spy and his daughter who are now British citizens.

Alarm bells were ringing on Thursday as new US sanctions drove down Russia's rouble and worries that Turkey was sliding toward a full-blown economic crisis battered the lira.

A senior State Department official estimated the sanctions could affect hundreds of millions of dollars in trade with Russian Federation.

In April 2018, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on seven of Russia's richest men-or "oligarchs"-as well as 17 top government officials, to put pressure on President Vladimir Putin's inner circle".

"The administration is rightly acting to uphold worldwide bans on the use of chemical weapons", said Ed Royce, R-Calif., chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking to reporters on a conference call, said the U.S. move was "absolutely unfriendly", but said Moscow continued to hope that for an improvement in battered U.S. -Russia relations.

‘Brady Bunch’ house sold to HGTV for home improvement show
After the buyer was revealed he changed his tune, saying he knew HGTV would do "the right thing". The network teased the announcement in a tweet early Tuesday morning.

Peskov highlighted on Thursday what he called the "unpredictability of Russia's partners across the Atlantic.you can expect anything from Washington", he told CBS News partner network BBC News, calling the us, "an unpredictable global player".

"The US has unmasked itself as the mastermind behind the cheap show to stage the poisoning of the Skripals", Irina Yarovaya said today.

The U.S. State Department said Wednesday that Congress had been notified and that the new sanctions would go into effect on August 22.

Russia's RTS stock index lost almost 3 percent of its value, while at a bond auction on August 8 the Russian government was only able to sell half the amount it had planned as borrowing costs jumped to the highest level in more than a year.

Moscow has been trying with mixed success to improve battered U.S. -Russia ties since Donald Trump won the White House in 2016, and Russia's political elite was quick to chalk up a summit last month between Trump and Vladimir Putin as a victory.

The attack prompted the United Kingdom and its Western allies to expel many Russian diplomats - and Russia retaliated with its own expulsions. The Washington Post reported that the 10-page order would give the president the authority to impose sanctions on "10 of the 30 largest business entities" in a country whose government has interfered in an election.

Some former officials told The Post, however, that the order seemed more like a "a cover-your-behind exercise" for the administration than meant to seriously deter foreign powers. Instead, Russia is likely to respond with its own sanctions.

At variance with Moscow over Ukraine and Syria, Western sanctions have already drastically reduced Western involvement in Russian energy and commodities projects, including large-scale financing and exploration of hard-to-recover and deep-water resources.
