  • A second earthquake has hit Lombok one week after the first struck the popular destination island

Indonesia evacuated hundreds of tourists from popular resorts and sent rescuers fanning across the holiday island of Lombok after a powerful quake killed at least 91 people and reduced thousands of buildings to rubble.

Power and communications were cut in some areas of Lombok, and the military said it was sending in a vessel with medical aid, supplies and logistical support for the island.

Australia's Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says he was "very lucky" to escape a deadly natural disaster on the Indonesian island of Lombok unharmed.

A 6.4-magnitude natural disaster shook the island July 29, killing more than a dozen people and briefly stranding hundreds of hikers on the slopes of a volcano.

Tourists queue to depart from the Praya Lombok International Airport on the Indonesian island of Lombok on August 6, 2018, after an natural disaster struck the island.

"There were widespread power outages (primarily in the northern and western regions of Lombok) although this is beginning to be restored. I could not stand up", said Gino Poggiali, a 43-year-old Frenchman, who was with his wife and two children at the airport. "Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking".

"They're all related to the fact that the ocean crust is moving down underneath Indonesia and that produces both the earthquakes and the volcanic activity", Professor Elders said.

TRT World speaks with journalist Kanupriya Kapoor, who is reporting from Lombok, on how some locals in the affected areas are having to fend for themselves.

Thousands of tourists who were visiting Lombok convened on the Gili Islands to be evacuated.

The quake was felt for several seconds in Bali, where people ran out of houses, hotels and restaurants.

However, as they arrived there, "people were running out", he added.

"We were sitting there having dinner at about 7 o'clock last night, we just felt really big sort of shaking and the lights went off and everyone just ran", said Australian tourist Kim Liebelt as he waited with other travellers for a flight out at Lombok's global airport. "We spoke to a lot of them and they were panicking about their family in Lombok". Eyewitnesses said a number of aftershocks rattled parts of Indonesia after the initial quake.

"People were just throwing their suitcases on board and I had to struggle to get my husband on, because he was bleeding", she said.
