  • Tommy Fleetwood tied for 12th at the Open Championship

If you follow golf at all you might recognize the name; British pro Tommy Fleetwood is now ranked 11th in the world and is a trendy pick for this weekend's PGA Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis.

Imagine waking up to $150,000 being deposited in your bank account and having no idea why you were suddenly a little heavier in the wallet.

The American Fleetwood was with his friend Greg Thorner when he got a shock to see the windfall on his account statement, straight after a supermarket payment of US$14.37.

But there appears to have been a small mixup, as the EuroTour sent the money to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

The curious situation was confirmed by Golf Digest, who reached out to the pro Fleetwood's wife and was told there had been a "huge clerical error by the European tour accounts department".

Yet this season has seen Pope make 684 runs for Championship leaders Surrey at an average of 85.5, including three centuries. Drizzle in London has left play looking unlikely before lunch, with the forecast for the whole of Thursday pretty bleak.

'He got on to his bank immediately and they didn't know what to say.

United Kingdom golfer Fleetwood has won a cool $9 million in prize money in the past two years - meaning he may have been forgiven for not noticing the oversight immediately. "That's when I realized that it must be for the other Tommy Fleetwood and I quickly worked out that it was his Open winnings", Thorner, a golf coach, added.

The Florida pro told USA Today he played one European Tour event in 1989 but the mix-up was likely cause he recently applied for a European senior event. That Tommy Fleetwood is probably used to having large sums show up randomly in his bank account.

"I wouldn't even know if I'd been paid or not because I don't really look", Fleetwood said. I know the European Tour are looking into it and I'm sure they will feel pretty bad about it.

It's just something I don't really look at but I'll get on top of it'.
