The top US general in the Middle East on Wednesday said the military remains "extraordinarily vigilant" about Iranian movements in the Persian Gulf following last week's Iranian naval exercise in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The ministry also reminded Washington that Beijing follows a consistent policy of opposing any "unilateral sanctions and long-armed jurisdiction" indiscriminately practiced by the USA against members of the worldwide community.

Tuesday's sanctions target Iran's purchases of USA dollars, metals trading, coal, industrial software and the auto sector. At current market rates, the imports are worth some $15 billion a year.

More broadly, Votel condemned Iran for its continued efforts to destabilise other countries in the region, including Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

European countries, hoping to persuade Tehran to continue to respect the deal, have promised to try to lessen the blow of sanctions and to urge their firms not to pull out.

The new USA sanctions, imposed on Tuesday, target Iran's access to dollars and its ability to trade in gold and other precious metals.

In addition, the Trump administration has sanctioned 38 Iran-related targets.

Rabiei's supporters say he is not responsible for Iran's economic crisis and were able to fend off an earlier attempt to impeach him in March.

The US leader took to Twitter on Tuesday to issue a strong warning to anyone doing business with Iran, after he reimposed sanctions on the country.

According to an Iranian news outlet, . the North Korean foreign minister briefed Rouhani on the ongoing nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington.

Donald Trump also firmly stated that those nations that disobey and continue trade with Iran after the November 4 deadline will "not be doing business with the United States".

Russia's foreign ministry said it was "deeply disappointed" by the return of sanctions, adding that it would do "everything necessary" to save the 2015 nuclear deal.

Votel said the USA military in the region continues closely monitoring Iran's activities, but he stopped short of saying the United States has adjusted its posture in the region in response to the exercise and rhetoric from Iranian leaders.

However, a senior United States official said it was "not particularly concerned" by the move because many major firms had already announced they were pulling out of Iran.

Iran's national flags are seen on a square in Tehran February 10, 2012, a day before the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
