Aziz Asber, the head of the Scientific Research Center in Syria's central province of Hama, was assassinated late on Saturday, according to activists and pro-government reports.

The attack was claimed by a Syrian group affiliated with the Tahrir al-Sham rebels. It includes the group formerly known as the Nusra Front, which served as al-Qaeda's Syrian branch.

The Abu Amara Brigades released a statement on their Telegram channel saying they had planted explosive devices that detonated and killed Asber.

Asber died after an explosion targeted his vehicle in the Hama countryside, al-Watan said in an online report.

Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said that experts from Syria's ally Iran were present at the Masyaf centre, which was developing short-range surface-to-surface missiles.

In the Syrian city of Masyaf in auto explosion killed a famous scientist Aziz Asbar, who is considered a confidant of President Bashar al-Assad.

An Israeli air strike targeted the centre on July 22, Syrian state media and the Observatory said.

The center has been targeted in two air attacks that have been attributed to Israel, including one in April that killed several Iranians.

Asbar headed the research centre in Hama's Masyaf, which was targeted in Israeli air strikes last month and in September a year ago, the Britain-based Observatory said. There was no comment from Israeli or Syrian government officials. At least 400,000 people have been killed and more than 11 million people displaced in the violence.
