Planet Mars is set to be visible from the Earth's surface on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, as the Red Planet is to pass closer to Earth overnight than it has ever been in the last 15 years.

The last time we saw the Red Planet up close was in 2003, when it was 55.8 million kilometres away from Earth - its closest venture to us in 60,000 years.

NASA and its partners are holding a $2.5 million competition to build a 3D printed habitat for deep space exploration, including the agency's journey to Mars. Mars will reach opposition again before then.

The next close approach between two planets will be 62 million kilometres in 2020, as per NASA.

Mars will start to dim by around mid-August and return to its normal magnitude of brightness around the start of September. It is visible as a bright reddish orange spot in the sky.

There is presently a planet-wide dust storm on Mars, a phenomenon that is said to occur when the planet is closest to the sun in its orbit.
