Isner now holds the record for the two longest matches ever played at Wimbledon - this one second only to the American's epic 11-hour, 5-minute classic against Nicolas Mahut in 2010.

At the 11th hour, literally and figuratively, Djokovic grabbed his first set point, but hit long for 9-all, then got a second look as a Nadal drop-shot sat up invitingly for him.

"They've paid to see two matches, and they came pretty close to only seeing one match", Anderson said. Just playing like that in those conditions was really tough on both of us.

Isner hadn't been broken in London throughout his run to his first Grand Slam championship semifinal. I really feel for him, because if I had been on the opposite end of this, I don't know how you can take that playing for so long and coming up short.

I really hope this a sign for grand slams to change this format.

Anderson defeated Isner, 7-6, -6-7, -6-7, 6-4, 26-24, after six hours and 36 minutes.

Brian Norton was the last South African man to reach the final in 1921.

With the win, Anderson will face off against the victor of Nadal-Djokovic match in the final at Wimbledon, with the hopes of winning the first major title of his career.

Canada, U.S. express concern at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation over Russian pipeline into Germany
There are always other options, the USA secretary said, noting that the parties had held frank discussions on Nord Stream 2. The US is opposed to the project because it will increase Europe's reliance on Russian Federation for gas supplies.

And that's where he'll meet Rafael Nadal for the 52nd time.

After so much speculation about a possible Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, 10 years after their last, the tennis world instead will get a semifinal featuring another outstanding rivalry: Nadal vs.

"That definitely brings a smile to my face", said Anderson, the runner-up to Nadal at last year's U.S. Open. They both serve like demons, and don't return serves particularly well.

Anderson finished the match with 49 aces and 118 winners; Isner had 53 aces and 129 winners. At 6-5, Anderson saved a set point with a smash, and went on to take the first set 7-6 (8) in 63 minutes on two errors by his opponent. He made it 0-30 in that game by winning a point after falling on his back behind the baseline but still got up in time to return Isner's shot.

Although Djokovic had chances to recover the break in the final game of the second, Nadal ultimately held as he levelled the match. It's the 12th matchup between No. 8 seed Anderson and No. 9 Isner, who leads the head-to-head 8-3. Isner wasted a set point in the opener.

Wimbledon officials have set the match to re-start at 1pm local time (10pm Saturday night AEST), which is just an hour before Serena Williams aims to equal the Grand Slam wins record in the women's final against Angelique Kerber. Because it was so late, the All England Club shut the retractable roof above the main stadium between the matches and turned on the arena's artificial lights.

Anderson had break points in the 15th, 21st and 35th games of the decider before taking victory when a tired Isner hit long.

Then, 122 minutes into the fifth set, the crowd went wild as a tired-looking Isner faced two more break points, only to save them with back-to-back aces as dark rain clouds gathered over Centre Court.
