Seven other Britons in the rescue, five of them divers, were due home on Friday.

They ended up stranded on a ledge in the darkness for nine days before they were found by two British divers on July 2.

Without the (Thai navy) SEALs, the officials, and everyone who came and helped, Dom wouldn't be here today.

The group ventured into the vast cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai after football practice on Jun 23 and were trapped when a rainy season downpour flooded tunnels.

Said the SEAL Navy commander: "It was hard but we had to keep fighting".

British divers Richard Stanton, left, and John Volanthen at the base camp for the rescue operation last week.

Chu tweeted a link to the Variety story on Wednesday and said that while it was too "early to discuss", he believed the cave rescue story was "too important [to] let others dictate who the real heroes are". No, we were just using a very unique skill set, which we normally use for our own interests and sometimes we are able to use that and give something back to the community.

The complex operation saw four boys rescued Sunday, four more on Monday and the last four on Tuesday, along with the team's coach.

An expert breaks down Donald Trump and Theresa May's hand-hold

"They had already been doing the most extraordinary dives through the cave and laying the very robust rope which made all subsequent dives to the soccer team not only possible, but safe", he wrote.

They were found 10 days later, huddled on a small, dry shelf just above the water, and divers and other worldwide rescuers plotted the complex mission to rescue the team before more rain came.

The 12 Thai schoolboys rescued from a cave this week were reportedly given a "small sedative" before they embarked on a rescue mission that continues to grab worldwide headlines.

"There is a lot of responsibility, that is all I am prepared to say. there is a lot of responsibility that an experienced diver could handle".

"We were very pleased and we were very relieved that they were all alive, but I think at that point we realized the enormity of the situation, and that's perhaps why it took a while to get them all out", Volanthen told Reuters after landing in the United Kingdom.

"The pressure that was put on these guys was enormous and they never dropped the ball for a second", Dr Harris said in a Facebook post detailing the operation. "So, that seemed to work".

Banphot said all 13 rescued team members will enter the monkhood to pay tribute to Saman Kunan, a former Thai navy SEAL who died while diving to place essential supplies along the rescue route. "It's kind of bittersweet for what's otherwise been an excellent operation".
