In contrast, the Red Arrow bus service between major cities, offered individual comfort closer to first-class than economy.

"The decline in ridership that led to the hard decision that Greyhound Canada took this week regarding its routes in Western Canada was not due to any single incident", Stuart Kendrick, senior-vice president of Greyhound Canada, said in a statement provided to CBC. Despite best efforts over several years, ridership has dropped almost 41 percent across the country since 2010 within a changing and increasingly challenging transportation environment.

In shutting down, the company is blaming a 41 per cent decline in ridership since 2010, persistent competition from subsidized national and inter-regional passenger transportation services, the growth of new low-priced airlines, regulatory constraints and the continued growth of vehicle ownership.

Kendrick says Greyhound Canada will continue to petition Ottawa to help fund transportation in northern communities.

The bus company's financial woes started nearly 10 years ago when they threatened to pull services out of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario if they did not receive $15 million in government aid.

Expressing concerns over such attacks during election campaigns, he called for serious investigations in these attacks. Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in a bomb-and-gun attack after an election rally ahead of 2008 polls.

She said the province has already issued grants to help bus routes get going between some smaller communities, and her government will now look to expand those programs or find other ideas to help Albertans get around. Greyhound Canada has long advocated for a community funding model to allow any private carrier to bid on essential rural services, he added. In the affected regions, the company has run an operating deficit since 2004. "The Greyhound bus service for many, many generations has served as the principle mode of transportation for our people".

"I automatically think of 2012", Cassidy said, referring to the parallel between Acadian Lines shutting down and the news from Greyhound.

"We have made the hard decision to downsize our Canadian business by discontinuing operations in all provinces except Ontario and Quebec and one route in British Columbia".

And to Greyhound - some thanks for providing rural/inexpensive transport up to this point, but mostly good riddance. At least one private bus operator stepped in to fill some of the discontinued routes on Vancouver Island, and the B.C. and federal governments provided $7.3 million to start a public bus service in northern B.C. when Greyhound left that area.

And its property at 100 Woolridge St., next to Ikea, will also be put up for sale after the business closes October 31, a company spokesperson told The Tri-City News today (Tuesday). He said he uses Greyhound to ship parts to other cities, and expects his costs will go up if he needs to use another service.
