Novak Djokovic ensured he will have a Wimbledon rest day on Tuesday after beating Karen Khachanov and the fading light to reach the quarter-finals.

It didn't show in Djokovic's play, though, as he embarked upon another swing of four games in succession, holding Nishikori to three points in his next two service sets as he soared into a 4-1 lead.

Djokovic, 31, will be playing in his 32nd Slam semi-final where he will face either world number one Rafael Nadal or fifth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro.

"After surgery I didn't think it was going to take me so much time to really get on the desired level". His latest foray into the final four of Wimbledon is just another addition to his now 32 Grand Slam semifinal appearances, now second on the list behind Roger Federer. But he grew frustrated after failing to capitalize on three straight break points in the third game of the second set and was given a code violation after slamming his racket into the ground.

He added: "I played very well in Queen's (where he finished runner-up) coming into Wimbledon". Djokovic is a national hero and I thank him for it, but how can you support Croatia, how don't you feel ashamed?

Nishikori promptly broke serve and then held to go 4-1 up before levelling the match at 1-1 but any sense of a fightback, and the possibility of a first Japanese man in the Wimbledon semi-finals since 1933, was short-lived.

With the Japanese serving to stay in the match, Djokovic wrapped things up after 2-1/2 hours on the first match point to secure his first Wimbledon semi-final since 2015.

He was soon up to 16th and by lap nine he was eighth, but some distance from Vettel, who led Bottas by six seconds on lap 12. I will not give up. " Interesting tactics I would say from this side but we'll do what we can to fight them", Hamilton said.

Djokovic was seen engaged in a heated discussion with the umpire in the aftermath of the warning and it is fair to say some of his comments and complaints have left a sour taste in the mouth of some Wimbledon punters over the course of the championships. Scot Murray, 32 - who triumphed here previous year alongside Martina Hingis - and former singles world No.1 Azarenka moved into the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Matwe Middelkoop and Johanna Larsson. The umpire Carlos Ramos warned the Serb for racket abuse as Nishikori strolled away with the second set.

"I didn't harm the grass, I know how I threw the racket".

"I want to use today's result as a spring from which to aim for a final place".

"That was I think the biggest chance I had".

'I'm sure he's in good shape again.

With Kevin Anderson taking nearly three and a half hours to tame French showman Gael Monfils in the previous match, Djokovic knew he had about two hours of daylight left if he wanted to avoid coming back on Tuesday's rest day to finish off the contest.

But by the time his semifinal starts, it will be Djokovic against the world, again.
