  • Papa John's founder apologizes for using N-word

Schnatter was criticized for blaming the NFL's handling of national anthem protests for his company's poor sales late a year ago.

Schnatter used the racial slur on the call during a training exercise surrounding the hate groups that have associated themselves with the pizza company following Schnatter's remarks in the NFL national anthem kerfuffle.

"Colonel Sanders called blacks n--", Schnatter said, referring to Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Harland Sanders, according to the Forbes report.

Schnatter then went on to describe his early life in IN, a place, he said, where Black people used to be dragged from trucks until they died. The reference apparently was meant to show that he found racism deplorable, but the source told Forbes that multiple people on the call were offended.

After Forbes magazine reported the gaffe, Schnatter said it was true he had used the "inappropriate and hurtful" word. "Regardless of the context, I apologise", the statement said.

The University of Louisville said it doesn't condone racism. but added it doesn't think Schnatter's comments "reflect his personal beliefs or values".

In a statement Wednesday evening, the company "announced that the independent directors of the company have accepted the resignation of John H. Schnatter as Chairman of the Board".

Schnatter came under fire in May, accused of using the racial slur in a conference call in which he went into graphic detail describing violence against minorities.

Although he had stepped down as the chief executive, Schnatter was still acting as the chairman and as a de facto mascot for the company.

Forbes reported the National Football League controversy made the company diminish his prominence in advertisements which Schnatter was not pleased about.

Papa John's Pizza is going to end its official sponsorship with the NFL.

Unsurprisingly, Papa John's shares have taken a hit since news of the call broke.

The marketing agency, identified as Laundry Service, later severed its ties with the pizza chain, Forces reported.

Louisville plays its home games at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, but players are pushing for a name change.

According to NBC News, Mr. Schnatter also resigned Wednesday from his vice chairman post on the University of Louisville Board of Trustees.
