Liverpool are pushing to close the signing of Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri before they leave for their preseason tour overseas.

Now, Pearce writes that talks have been opened with Stoke as Liverpool look to capitalise on the Potters being relegated last season.

The Swiss winger once again impressed for Switzerland at this summer's World Cup, but could ultimately do little to stop his country sliding out of the tournament at the hands of a plucky Sweden side in the round of 16. All players are afforded a three-week break after playing in worldwide competition and that would mean he would be ready to return to training for the week beginning July 23.

Following Stoke's relegation to the Championship, the 26-year-old expressed a desire to remain in the Premier League, recently stating it is "no secret" he will leave the bet365 Stadium.

The Reds have been in talks with his representatives over a proposed move and according to Italian broadcasterr Sportitalia, they are close to agreeing terms on a contract with the Swiss winger.

Shaqiri joined Stoke from Inter Milan in August 2015 for a club record fee of £12m. A deal for the Lyon captain may yet be resurrected after France's World Cup campaign, however.

A move to Anfield would make Shaqiri the Reds' third signing of the summer following the arrival of midfielders Fabinho and Isaac Christie-Davies.
