Giants snag touted cornerback in NFL's supplemental draft

A summer version of rookie acquisition presents itself Wednesday in the form of the supplement draft, held annually for prospects who did not enter the regular draft in April but have since submitted their names and plan to play this season. Each team in the National Football League gets split up into three groups depending on how their season played out. The Giants twice before dipped into this draft to take a player, selecting quarterback Dave Brown in the first round in 1992 and safety Tito Wooten in the fourth round in 1994.

This year's list has 5 such players: DB-Adonis Alexander (Virginia Tech), CB-Sam Beal (Western Michigan), S-Brandon Bryant (Mississippi State), RB-Martayveus Carter (Grand Valley State), LB-Bright Ugwoegbu (Oregon State). After looking like a potential high draft pick, he took a step back in 2017, playing in just eight games and recording 27 tackles and one interception. All the teams are sorted into 3 groups: (1) teams with six or fewer wins, (2) non-playoff teams with 7 wins and (3) playoff teams. In this particular case, the Chicago Bears fall in the first grouping. After that group comes the other teams who failed to make the postseason, and then the 12 playoff teams from 2017 round out the draft order.

The supplemental draft is typically for players who have had troubled pasts. Kevin Johnson had his fifth-year option picked up but, he's been hurt frequently and plays too inconsistently.

So why might the Colts change this narrative? "We just feel it gives us a really talented young kid with the ability to ascend". That's a given. Cornerback is now a barren spot without much proven talent.

This would also fly in the face of the type of corners the Browns have been adding this season. But down the line, he can be a guy that you're glad you invested in.

Respect the allies you have
Trump was due to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron later on Wednesday. We pay far too much and they pay far too little. "In that we also defend the interests of the United States".

The catch with all of this is that if your team winds up drafting a player, then they forfeit the corresponding selection in the normal NFL Draft next year.

- Scouting report: A touted high school recruit with both safety and cornerback potential, Alexander started his career on special teams and at safety for the Hokies, garnering Freshman All-American accolades. Alexander plays with outstanding body control throughout his coverage, staying close to his receiver and swallowing up cushion as receivers work vertically. Was the price of a 3rd round pick in the 2019 draft expensive? The Texans have two second-round picks in 2019, their own and the Seahawks from the Duane Brown trade. The rising senior is undersized at 6-1, 205 pounds and did not test well at his pre-draft workout.

This is nitpicking to some degree, but Beal's hands actually come into question - which is surprising, considering the fact that he's a former wide receiver.

Spending an early pick on a cornerback who won't play this season seems irresponsible, especially for a team that's going all in on winning a title next season.
