Facebook Slapped With "Maximum" U.K. Fine For Cambridge Analytica Scandal

Facebook broke the law by failing to safeguard people's data and not being transparent about how that data could be harvested, said Ms Denham.

The UK's data protection watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office, has found the company lacking sufficient privacy protections and failing to catch third party companies like Cambridge Analytica misusing its users' data despite warnings. The office finds that Facebook lacked the privacy protections necessary to catch Cambridge Analytica before it was too late.

The survey results were allegedly used by election consultants Cambridge Analytica to target voters in U.S. elections, including Donald Trump's presidential campaign. "We're reviewing the report and will respond to the ICO soon". It can respond to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) before a final decision on a fine is made.

"Facebook has failed to provide the protections required under data protection laws", Denham told reporters before the announcement, according to Politico. The data allegedly helped the Trump campaign target political advertising more accurately by giving them insight into what American Facebook users liked and disliked. The ICO is also probing another pro-Brexit campaign group, Vote Leave, for sending personal data on United Kingdom citizens to a Cambridge Analytica-like (and possible Cambridge Analytica-affiliated) company called AggregateIQ, which Facebook has kicked off its platform. This initial report blossomed into multiple complaints about how Facebook controls the user data gathered by other companies, how much data Facebook itself stores and more.

Facebook shut down the data sharing tool in 2014 and has said it became aware the data had been sold in 2015, but was assured it was deleted.

Manafort No Longer Wants To Move Jails While He Awaits Trial
According to the filing, Manafort reads and writes emails on a second laptop that his team brings in and out of the prison. The judge added that Manafort's "access to counsel and his ability to prepare for trial trumps his personal comfort".

The report sets out regulatory action taken against a number of the star players in this year's data scandal, including a criminal prosecution against Cambridge Analytica's parent biz SCL Elections Ltd - which has since folded, in name at least - for failing to properly deal with the ICO's enforcement notice.

The British agency said it is still weighing potential penalties against Kogan as well as Alexander Nix, the former chief executive of Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook's revenue past year totalled $40.7bn (£30.7bn), so half a million pounds.

Just 53 Australians downloaded the "this is your digital life" Facebook quiz app responsible for the Cambridge Analytica data breach.

Today's update "includes the ICO's intention to fine Facebook a maximum £500,000".Had the Cambridge Analytica scandal happened after the advent of the General Data Protection Regulation, the ICO could have hit the tech firm with a penalty up to £17m, or four per cent of global turnover. "We have been working closely with the ICO in their investigation". Tony Romm and Elizabeth Dwoskin wrote this story.
