  • Melissa Brunning gets treatment for her injured finger

Speaking after the incident, she said: "It happened so quickly".

Brunning said all she could focus on was her finger and the fact that it was being "shredded off".

The woman named Melissa Brunning was on holiday at Dugong Bay in Western Australia.

Melissa Brunning was on a friend yacht's off the coast of Kimberley, Australia, enjoying the "once-in-a-lifetime" trip, when she tried feeding four tawny nurse sharks that were swimming around the boat.

"I think the shark was in shock as much as I was. the only way I can describe it is this huge pressure and it felt like it was shredding it off the bone", the 34-year-old structural draftsperson said.

"I came up and I was like, "I have lost my finger, my finger is gone". The man put the fish on the bottom of the boat and found that her stomach moves. They'll usually keep to themselves but can bite or act defensively in the event that a human steps on or disturbs them. Her injuries include a fracture, a torn ligament and cuts, according to Sky News. The finger was also badly infected, The West Australian reported, and Brunning had to undergo surgery to flush out the infection.

Bug temporarily unblocked Facebook and Messenger users
The bug was active from May 29 to June 5 in both Facebook and Messenger, company chief privacy officer Erin Egan informed. Facebook has advised those users affected that they didn't have to do anything as the issue has now been rectified.

Brunning, however, admitted that the incident was her fault, and that it was not a shark attack.

She said she was wrong to attempt to feed the sharks and cautioned others against doing the same.

Then she shows them her scars.

And it's not just foreign tourists who need to be mindful. I've always had the opinion that when you're in the water, they're top of the food chain, it's their domain.

"It is not the shark's fault at all, but it could have been a lot worse", Brunning said, adding that she had learnt to "respect marine life, and look at it in awe, but just leave them alone".
