  • Former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak is greeted by party members at the party’s delegates meeting in Pekan

A 1MDB taskforce set up by the government this week said 408 bank accounts involving funds of almost 1.1 billion ringgit had been frozen.

The 1MDB investment fund has chalked up billions of ringgit worth of debts, while United States investigations show those linked to Najib as having allegedly misappropriated US$4.5 billion from the fund and which partially made it to Najib's bank account, AP said.

UMNO did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

UMNO announced via Twitter in the evening that former Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was elected as the new president, after he secured support from over half of the divisions. Najib has consistently denied wrongdoing in dealings with 1MDB.

UMNO has led a multi-party coalition to govern Malaysia for six decades before losing the general election in May.

Najib's United Malays National Organization, which is the main party in the former ruling coalition, said in a statement that the cash seized by police was donations to the party, partly for the recent elections.

Kuala Lumpur: Putrajaya will be selling all the 12,000 pieces of jewellery, 567 luxury handbags, 423 watches and 234 sunglasses seized by investigators, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said.

Mahathir said in an interview with Reuters last month that embezzlement and bribery with government money were among the charges that Malaysia was looking to bring against Najib, adding they had "an nearly flawless case" against him.

Prime Minister Mahathir, meanwhile, has said Malaysia is looking to bring a range of charges against Najib, including embezzlement and bribery.

This week, police said almost $275 million worth of jewelry, handbags, watches and other items were found at premises linked to Najib and his family.

"I think he will be brought to the court soon", Mahathir was quoted as saying on an official visit to Jakarta.
