Samsung Messages app randomly sends photos to phone contact list

  • Users have reported their phones have sent

Their owners say that Samsung Messages, the default texting app for Galaxy devices, pushed photos and scheduled texts to random contacts, but left no record of the messages being sent.

As initially reported by Gizmodo, the problem seems to be happening on Samsung Galaxy Note 8, S9 and S9+ models that use T-Mobile as their carrier.

One person said the app sent their photo albums to their girlfriend at 2.30am without them knowing - there was no trace of the transfer on the phone, although it showed up in their T-Mobile US account.

According to reports, a small group of people with Samsung cells have stated that their phones have randomly sent images in their galleries to numbers in their contacts.

Samsung phones seem to be trying to take over the world, messaging random users' contacts and sending them messages and photos.

They added that they had enabled a setting allowing pictures to be automatically backed-up to Google, and suspected that the leak occurred because of an update to the Samsung Messages app. He also added that he has never used the Shared tab in Samsung Gallery app, which lets users send photos through messaging apps, email or social media without leaving their photo gallery.

Samsung has confirmed that it is aware of the reports, and a spokesperson said in a statement that the company is looking into whether there's root cause. Until then, there are two easy fixes for the concerned users: 1. The update was meant to improve its capabilities by switching from the existing SMS protocol to the more capable RCS (Rich Communication Services).

Samsung and T-Mobile didn't immediately reply to CNET's requests for comment.

The issue isn't specific to one mobile carrier alone, and users from different operators reported the same problem.

So we're asking - is this affecting you?
