England's Harry Kane wants to be 'best in the world'

  • Gareth Southgate's England team face Tunisia in their World Cup Group G opener in Volgograd on June 18

At the highest level, success and failure can often be down to one player rising above the rest to produce the decisive moment.

Provided Belgium do not lose to Tunisia on Sunday, England just need to beat Panama to be sure of progressing to the first knockout phase.

That was exactly what England did, but they needed Kane to be at his predatory best.

He had to guide his header in, and it was a superb finish under intense pressure in the final minute of a World Cup game.

Paul Merson though, capped 21 times by England, was far from pleased with what he saw from the number nine.

The way he took his chances in Volgograd shows how freaky a decision that was because, if he was taking them on Monday night, we would not have won that game.

'Ronaldo is the best in the world, up there with Messi, but the challenge is there to be with them.

Federer beats Raonic for Stuttgart title, his 18th on grass
Quick courts also help stop his opponents exploiting his weaknesses, namely his movement and tame backhand. There, he defeated Federer in the final. "The key for me is to be ready for that opening match".

"No matter what system we play, the important thing is when you are attacking you still have structure in your play".

Kane's early goal capped a blistering start from Gareth Southgate's side and Merson was full of praise for their early work.

That was extended to two and then three by Romelu Lukaku, who banged home goals in the 69th and 75th minutes. The Leicester forward is a proven impact sub, but he has appeared incompatible with Kane and, like Welbeck, it is hard to envisage Vardy starting in Russian Federation.

Everything about Harry's performance carried the hallmark of a top-class centre-forward.

Rashford was the first player Southgate turned to help change the game with Tunisia digging deep at the Volgograd Arena.

Completing the list of most popular tweets of the evening were England's official account announcing the starting line-up and Kane's victor - and these two funnies. As a striker, you never know when the next chance is going to come. The game-winning goal understandably sent England fans into an absolute frenzy.

Both Sterling and Alli are consistent goal scorers for their club teams, but neither can yet say they have made the step up at worldwide level. To take anything out of the game Southgate probably has to limit his ambition and play Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier together.
