Pogba pokes France past Socceroos after World Cup’s first VAR penalty

As Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele failed to have an impact in open play, Pogba, one of only four players with previous World Cup experience, came up with the goods nine minutes from time.

Stephanie Brantz caught up with Julien Laurens after France squeezed past Australia with a 2-1 win.

Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak sent his French counterpart Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the spot to give Australia hope of forcing a draw at the Kazan Arena only for Pogba to grab the victor in the 81st minute. It's the first-ever use of VAR at a World Cup game.

The Manchester United star pulled out a pad after the 2-1 victory in Kazan on Saturday (Sunday NZ time) to reveal a photograph of his dad, Fassou Antoine Pogba, who died a year ago at 79 after a long illness.

Van Marwijk, who led the Netherlands to the final in 2010 before an extra-time defeat to Spain, said however he was not bitter against France. "Let's say from 10, seven people say penalty and three say no penalty".

"Yes, I speak with Dybala, but whether I speak to Dybala or speak with (Samuel) Umtiti, who plays at Barcelona, it's not there I will go and play there!"

"He was standing very close to the moment of the penalty, and he said directly, "Go (play) on".

"It's also a human being so everybody makes mistakes". It is very hard for a referee to decide.

"That's a choice, that's Didier's (Deschamps) one".

"From my position I could not see it [the penalty] really well but at first I thought it was no penalty".

Josh Risdon was ruled to have conceded a penalty after review. More importantly, many claimed they also showed the Australian defender initially made no contact at all with Griezmann, only clipping his heel after his heavy first touch had appeared to take the ball away from him.

Paul Pogba later scored the winning goal in the 81st minute, and goal-line technology was used to confirm the ball had crossed the line after bouncing down off the crossbar.
