  • U.S., Canada and Mexico to Host World Cup in 2026

Morocco lost out in the challenge at the FIFA Congress, Sportinglife.ng can report.

The provincial NDP government nixed B.C. Place as a venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the lack of cost assurances from FIFA, but Victoria remains in the running as a potential training base ahead of the competition that will take place in June of that year. It received a significantly higher rating from Federation Internationale de Football Association than Morocco's bid, offered much more certainty in terms of venues and infrastructure and promised billions of dollars more in revenue.

Herdman, who coached the women's national squad when Canada hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, says "we were singing O Canada with 60,000 people, alongside everyone that was watching".

Tourism Calgary chief executive officer Cindy Ady believes the prospect of World Cup soccer matches in Canada can enhance the country's, and potentially Alberta's, sports profile when it comes to a possible Winter Games bid.

But he also pointed to the certainty of the bid's 23 stadiums - already built, burnished and ready for action - including Toronto's BMO Field, Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium and Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

Both Mexico and the US have previously hosted the tournament and the US Soccer President was ecstatic when the announcement was made.

A spokesman for Ontario's incoming premier said Doug Ford is looking forward to the prospect of hosting games in the province, but did not respond to questions about funding. So between selling us getting involved, it's also: "What can we set as the footprint to leave a better Baltimore after the event's gone?"

Canada and the United States did not qualify for the tournament.

While Canada has never hosted-or even qualified for-the men's World Cup, it can count on its more experienced co-hosts and current NAFTA partners.

Saudi Arabia, Morocco's long-time ally, "led an all-out campaign" in favour of the North American trio's World Cup bid, according to local press.

The World Cup is coming back to America in 2026.

Soccer is Mexico's national sport, but is still considered a niche sport in the United States and Canada.

News that the 2026 men's World Cup will be played entirely on grass means an apology is in order to top female soccer players.

The city has a chance to host warm-up friendly matches and perhaps other events ahead of the worldwide soccer competition, which returns to the United States for the first time since 1994.

Bid leader Cordeiro said his team was "humbled" by the result and predicted the tournament would put football "on a new and sustainable path for generations to come".

The U.S. has submitted 17 cities to host matches, but that list will be narrowed down to 10 by 2021. But to ensure the point is moot, Jones said the USA must reach underserved communities to find talent, develop teens such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and the Red Bulls' Tyler Adams and bring soccer passion to the public.
