  • North Koreans gather round a newspaper stand at a subway station in the capital Pyongyang on Wednesday

North Korean state media heralded the summit between Kim Jong Un and President Trump as "the meeting of the century" and emphasized Trump's announcement to end the "war games" with South Korea, according to reports.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

Going into the historic Singapore summit, it was quite well-known that President Trump eschews briefing notes and lectures from his aides.

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most unsafe problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!"

Trump at a news conference Tuesday after the summit suddenly announced that he would end "provocative" and "expensive" joint military operations between the US and South Korea, declaring "I think it's inappropriate to have war games" while negotiations were underway. So, we want the president to be successful in gaining a way in which the Korean Peninsula will be nuclear-free.

Trudeau on Trump: we support North Korea efforts, won't engage on comments
Navarro's apology was unusual in that President Donald Trump and his aides have seldom walked back harsh and even incorrect statements.

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the United States agreed to "provide security guarantees".

Referring to Kim Jong Un, Trump said: "His country does love him".

North Korea typically heavily censors its local and foreign content, with events often not being reported until several days after, if at all.

The welcome from Japan was conspicuously less effusive than from other countries, with Tokyo under direct threat from North Korean missiles and reliant on the U.S. for its defence.

Given the broad scope of the eventual declaration - which critics say made little actual progress towards denuclearisation - officials from the United States and North Korea face a long and rocky road of negotiation. On Wednesday morning, he took to Twitter to claim there was "no longer" a nuclear threat posed by the North Korean regime. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. But Trump's triumphalism is not based on concrete commitments by Kim that were established by his own administration's expectations setting before the talks.
