She walked out of prison in Aliceville, Alabama, on Wednesday and into a national conversation about criminal punishment. She is forecasted to be released from prison soon.

President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of a low-level drug offender whose case was championed by Kim Kardashian West during a White House meeting.

Kardashian West thanked the president and his team and said Johnson's commutation "is inspirational and gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance".

Mrs. Kardashian West reacted positively to the news, as one would have expected.

"I started screaming, and crying and jumping". Johnson screamed, Kardashian recalled.

"I'd like to tell him that, please, please remember us, the others who have been left behind because there are so many like me who need to have an opportunity, the opportunity that I've had."

In the United States, the pardon power for federal crimes is granted to the President of the United States under Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution which states that the President "shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States". Ivanka Trump was one of the first people she reached out to about Johnson's case, Kardashian told CNN's Van Jones on Thursday.

After more than two decades behind bars Alice Marie Johnson was given a presidential pardon by Donald Trump.

Unlike a pardon, the commutation will not erase Johnson's conviction but will end her sentence.

Her clemency had been rejected by President Barack Obama, who commuted the sentences of hundreds of federal inmates convicted of drug crimes.

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner had been talking to the E! reality star for several months about Johnson's case, and Kardashian hired her attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, to act as her legal counsel. Now, her own daughter is seven months pregnant, and she can't wait to meet her grandmother. She and her family drove back to Memphis that same night. "There were times we didn't want to get too pushy but didn't want to go off the radar. I promise I will not let you down", Johnson said in an Associated Press interview. Then, she received a phone call from her mother. "I'll do whatever it takes to get her out". When West heard Johnson's story, she tweeted that she didn't find it fair. But the news came so fast she could not make it in time. "They're going to have to catch me from running", said Johnson. "This moment right now is happening because President Trump had mercy on me", she said. "I guess in order to be a phoenix I had to rise above the ashes".

She remembers the day she was sentenced.

"I have not been in a auto without handcuffs in nearly 22 years", she said.

"I'm just as shocked as anyone". This is so wonderful to me.

"She said after her robbery (in a Paris hotel) she realized that material things don't mean as much to her as they used to".
