A man was arrested in central Japan after stabbing one person to death and injuring two others aboard a bullet train tonight, a rare violent assault in the Asian nation.

He attacked the victims around 10pm aboard the shinkansen train which was travelling from Tokyo to a station in Osaka, police and news reports said.

22-year-old Ichiro Kojima told investigators that he was irritated and had chosen the targets at random.

The police detained the 22-year-old male stabber on suspicion of attempted murder and are now investigating the case. The other two victims are both women, according to local media. At some point, Kojima then overpowered and stabbed Umeda, who tried to stop him.

Investigators found two knives in the auto where the attack took place.

A female passenger told NHK: "Everyone fled and fell like one domino falling after another". According to him, he didn't plan the attack and attacked the passengers of the train "only because I was highly annoyed".

The attack took place in auto No. 12 of the 16-car train while it was between Shin-Yokohama and Odawara stations, both in Kanagawa.

"I have been always anxious about him", his grandmother said in a telephone interview early Sunday. The train was bound for the western city of Osaka. She had called his mobile phone several times recently but was unable to talk with Kojima directly. The train was carrying more than 800 passengers at the time of the incident.

The attack occurred in auto No. 12 of the 16-car train, which was carrying some 880 passengers.
