Vestberg has led a team building out Verizon's fibre network infrastructure and was overseeing the US build-out.

Former Ericsson chief executive Hans Vestberg was named Friday as the new CEO of United States telecom group Verizon, succeeding Lowell McAdam as of Aug 1.

Verizon Communications Inc. named Hans Vestberg chief executive officer, putting an end to months of speculation over who would take over at the wireless giant in the midst of a tumultuous year for the telecommunications industry. He'll remain the CEO until the end of the year when he will be retiring.

Present responsibilities of Hans Vestberg, 52, include developing the strong architecture for Verizon's fiber-centric networks, including 4G LTE network, 5G deployment in the US, residential fiber network, and a global internet backbone and undersea cable network with massive investment. "For Verizon, the time for a change in leadership is now, and I am confident that Hans is the right person to bring Verizon through its next chapter".

The decision to name Vestberg as Verizon's new CEO seems to indicate that the company, unlike rival AT&T, wants to focus on its wireless technology more than films and television.

As Verizon CTO, Vestberg "has demonstrated his willingness to disrupt our own processes and bring in new practices that make us stronger for our employees, customers and shareholders", McAdam commented. Lowell has been a visionary leader, steering Verizon into new growth markets in wireless, the Internet of Things and digital media. The company also acquired 45 percent of Vodafone's $130 billion stake in Verizon Wireless, now the biggest technology deal of all time.

Hans Vestberg had served as the CEO at Ericsson for a long time but had stepped down in 2016 after the company had hit a rough patch.

Verizon acquired Yahoo and AOL under McAdams administration. And the telecom company has also fiercely pushed its FiOS broadband network and 4G LTE technology.

Though, media is gradually becoming obsolete in telecom.

"We are experiencing unprecedented changes in the way users interact in the digital world, and we are racing ahead to remain at the forefront of technology, connectivity and mobility,"he said". Companies are now more focused on growing the number of customers with varied strategies.
